Long-term Break

Hello readers, As indicated in the title above The Imperial Painter is about to go on a long-term break. I’m not stopping any on my sculpting work and I will continue to photo document it for future use on the site. As for why I’m stopping? I need a break from this, I recently got a new job, which is of course cutting in to my free time for both sculpting, painting and blogging. I should be back up and running (So long as all goes to plan (haha like that ever happens.)) with a new look for the site, and a few other things, by the end of the year. There will be one more post later next month with the finished Heart of Glorm miniatures and some WiP shots of them.

That’s it for now, I hope to see you all next month. If you have a question, comment or criticism please feel free to leave it in the comment section below, and have a great day. IP out.

Mice & Mystics: WiP pics for Heart of Glorm. [post 35]

Mice & Mystics logoHello and welcome back for what is now week sixty-five of my hobby blog.

Well that break lasted longer than I thought it would… Any way I am back now and I feel that I owe a bit of an explanation for my long absence. The reason for it was a general lack of inspiration for the models as well as a low amount of week to week progress that left me with little desire to post anything. What I am posting today is the culmination of the work I did over that five month period. As a result of that there aren’t any real WiP shots of what went in to the minis over that time. Anyway as the next step is painting them, I hope to give you guys proper weekly progress updates for the miniatures. So without further ado, on to the minis!

Skulker Rats. A couple of these guy where finished a in my post last November but I’m posting them again as this post is meant to be a completion of the sculpting phase of Heart of Glorm. One thing I learned with the completion of these minis is that having concept art is of utmost importance. As you can see there is quite the quality deference between rat 1 and the rest of them. That is because rat 1 was based of the art on the Skulker rat card and the others came straight from my imagination, and where never put to paper. If they had been, then they might have come out better.

Mindless Rats. Now these guys have been finished for quite a while so I there’s not really any change to the models themselves to report, but I have started painting them.

The Tokens. Not much has changed with these, but I now have a picture of the cheese tokens. I also have painted the Necro-Brodie token, thought I’m not really happy with it, so I might repaint it.

The Big Bads. In the skulker rat part of the post, I said that having good art as a starting point makes sculpting way easier. Well that’s not always the case. Take Skorch for instance, this guy was a royal pain in my butt. In fact I’m not sure which one I hated working on more the lurker or Skorch. Despite that (or maybe because of that), Skorch is most defiantly the miniature I’m most proud of, and the most happy with the way it came out. The only thing I’m not quite happy with is the way the fire breath came out, it looks a bit to much like liquid and not flames. But hopefully it’ll look more like fire once its painted.

The Good Guys. The slugs haven’t been changed at all since the last post with them in it, so we’ll skip over them to the Packrat peddler. Last we saw this guy I was trying to get his glasses to come out right, which I fount was alot easier said that done. After multiple attempts to make a pair of glasses half the size of my thumbnail that didn’t look completely wrong, I gave up on glasses and tried something new. In the end I decided on a pair of aviator goggles, as the skull cap he was already wearing looked quite a bit like the old World War I aviator cap that would go with said goggles. I also finished up the acorn cap he’s holding and gave him a proper base.

And lastly a bunch of group pictures.

Alright, that’s it for today, I hope to see you all next time. If you have a question, comment or criticism please feel free to leave it in the comment section below, and have a great day. IP out.

Mice & Mystics: WiP pics for Heart of Glorm. [post 34]

Mice & Mystics logo   Hello and welcome back for week forty-three of my hobby blog.

First off, my apologies for the content drought of the past few weeks. The main contributors to that being nasty weather (storms make my internet die), some real life stuff and the launch of the first expansion for a game I play (Guild Wars 2). Hopefully I can get back on track with with making these minis and posting. On to the Minis!

Skorch – WiP [pic 7]

First up is Skorch! If you remember in my last post I said that I wasn’t happy with the way the carapace turned out, and that I might rip it off and start over. Well as you can see in the pic that’s exactly what I did. My mistake with the first attempt, was to make the carapace in one piece, and well as you could tell it didn’t look that great. For this attempt I made the carapace out of individual segments. Starting with the tail end segment and moving towards the front of the mini, I also added a frill to the head segment (to make it look cooler). Next I made and added the legs to one side of the model. I have all twenty-two legs made I just haven’t had time to attach them all to the model. As for how I made the legs I used the guide I found here, this guy also has a whole lot of other great sculpting guides, from bird wings to armor!

And lastly I rebased each of the older minis to have a proper cobblestone base.

Alright, that’s it for today, I hope to see you all next time. If you have a question, comment or criticism please feel free to leave it in the comment section below, and have a great day. IP out.

No Post

Sorry guys and gals, but there will not be a post for this week as, well I just didn’t have time to get any work done on my miniatures. I’ll try and make sure that I’ve got something to  show for next week, but who knows.

IP out.

Mice & Mystics logo   Hello and welcome back for week thirty-nine of my hobby blog.

I know I said I’d have this up yesterday. I was busy and it just slipped my mind. Anyway it’s up now, so without further ado. On to the minis!

Skorch – WiP [pic 6]

First up is Skorch!

As you can see I’ve added its eyes as well as extending his carapace all the way down its back. I’m not quite happy with the way the carapace turned out, so I may rip it off and start from scratch.

Packrat Peddler – WiP [pic 10]

Next and last is the Packrat Peddler!

I finally got the eyes on this guy to come out right! I also got his skullcap (I think that what that thing on his head is called) done. All thats left to do on this guy is to make him some glasses, and get that acorn cap in his hand! (plus a few clean-up details).

Well, that’s it for today, I hope to see you all next time. If you have a question, comment or criticism please feel free to leave it in the comment section below, and have a great day. IP out.

Post Delay

Hey, I’m sorry to say that there will not be a post today as I’ve gotten hit hard with some nasty allergy’s, and I really don’t feel up writing a full post today. I’ll be busy for the next couple of days, but I’ll try and have a post up on this coming Tuesday.

IP out.

Mice & Mystics logo   Hello and welcome back for week thirty-eight of my hobby blog.

Alright, this week I’ve made some more progress on the Packrat Peddler mini. Also I’ve started on another mice and mystics miniature that is unrelated to the current batch of minis I’ve been making. For now though I’m going to hold off on posting any pics of it, as I’m not sure how it’s going to turn out. Anyway, on to the mini!

First (and only) mini today is the Packrat Peddler!

You know one thing I hate about cameras? The fact that they show up all the tiny little flaws that your miniature has. Things that you would never notice with the naked eye.

Anyway as for the mini itself over the last week I’ve added the two hanging pots, as well as the string and pouch to his staff. I also added the second strap for his pack.

Mice & Mystics logo   Hello and welcome back for week thirty-seven of my hobby blog.

This week I’ve gone and (figuratively) dusted off the Packrat Peddler and Skorch. I don’t really have any thing else to say so… onto the minis!

Skorch – WiP [pic 5]

First up is Skorch! And yes the last time you saw him he had legs. The legs where getting in my way while sculpting so I temporarily removed them. Anyway this week I’ve added the head as well as the first four segments of carapace.

Packrat Peddler – WiP [pic 8]

Next and last is the Packrat Peddler. With this guy I’m having quite a bit of trouble getting the eyes to look right on him. Most likely because I have no real experience with sculpting eyes. Anyway I have a few Ideas as for how to “cheat” my way around sculpting proper eyes.

Alright, that’s it for today, I hope to see you all next time. If you have a question, comment or criticism please feel free to leave it in the comment section below, and have a great day. IP out.
